With Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag set to release towards the end of this year, the Assassin’s Creed franchise s showing no signs of slowing down although many would argue that it has lost its way and forgotten its roots. I’m quite firmly among those many and believe that Black Flag may just be taking the series too far with a heavy focus on naval combat and really the entire game seems like Pirates of the Caribbean with a hidden-blade tacked on.
It’s times like these when it’s always fun to hear from the people who got the series in motion and who better than the father of Assassin’s Creed, Patrice Desilets.
“I like the first Assassin’s Creed because it’s the purest one. There’s a bunch of stories that you can have, but it’s all in your head. You have to create your own adventures,” Désilents told Edge.
“Whereas in Assassin’s Creed 2, we created the adventures for you and you’re following them. For me, the first one is an amazing toy. The second one is the real game with rules and missions and it’s really precise.
“But personally I like the poetry of the first one. It’s pure.”
Desilets recently returned to the fold at Ubisoft after having moved over to THQ Montreal which was then bought up by his former employers.
“Out in the kingdom, with your horse, there are so many places with little setups with Crusaders where you can tell a story. When you get close to Damascus, there’s a guy on a stage and he has 35 soldiers in front of him. If you kill him, they all chase you. I played that and it became my little story,” he said.
“With Assassin’s Creed, our problem was we never actually asked anyone to do it. Most of the players just pass by those setups. But in Assassin’s Creed II, we had a mission for all of them.”
I’m inclined to agree with him. Maybe not in terms of the poetry of the original AC but that the experience was so much purer. Yes, the game was flawed and repetitive but it remains one of my all-time favourites and I’ve played several of the missions over 10 times. AC II remains the greatest game in the series in my opinion and perhaps that is because it took the concept and turned into a real game.
Where the series is headed now is a mystery but it certainly isn’t back to its roots, not unless Desilets is allowed to step in and do some course-correction. I’m certainly not advocating him as the Messiah or saviour of the franchise but he did mastermind it and knows it better than anyone else.
